Greece’s tourism sector is set to experience its third consecutive year of record performance, showcasing a remarkable increase in revenues. These developments reflect the sector’s resilience and ability to navigate a challenging global landscape marked by uncertainty and fierce competition.
The Ministry of Tourism is actively prioritizing the modernization of tourism infrastructure, development of niche tourism markets, enhancements in service quality, and digital promotion strategies. These initiatives aim to ensure sustainable growth within the sector while enhancing its economic contributions, thereby creating more job opportunities and fostering regional development.
For the first time, Greece is executing a cohesive policy focusing on mountain destinations as year-round autonomous tourism hubs. As emphasized by Minister Kefalogianni, Greece’s mountainous regions are now seen as a strategic opportunity rather than merely supplementary to the summer tourist influx. This initiative aims to increase visitor stays and expand the economic impacts across various regions, helping to diversify the tourism product and attract higher-value visitors while supporting local economies in lesser-known destinations.
The Special Spatial Planning Framework for Tourism is essential to Greece’s strategy for ensuring sustainable tourism development. Furthermore, Ms. Kefalogianni highlighted the significance of regulating short-term property rentals. This initiative aims to enhance service quality, foster healthy competition, and protect the quality of life for local residents in high-demand tourist areas.
Substantial investments from the Recovery and Resilience Fund are pivotal for the growth of Greece’s tourism sector. These investments are aimed at upgrading specialized tourism segments, such as marinas, ski resorts, diving attractions, spa facilities, and enhancing beach accessibility. During the assembly, Minister Kefalogianni expressed gratitude towards the outgoing SETE President, Mr. Yiannis Paraschis, for his invaluable contributions to the sector. She also welcomed the newly appointed SETE President, Ms. Agapi Sbokou, commending her market knowledge and leadership capabilities essential for navigating Greek tourism through its next developmental phase.
