Explore South India in Luxury: The Return of the Golden Chariot for 2026-2027

The Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) is excited to announce that the famed Golden Chariot luxury train will recommence its luxurious journeys for the 2026–2027 season, complete with upgraded cabins, enhanced safety features, and three exceptional routes through South India. Managed by Indian Railways, the Golden Chariot continues to showcase the rich cultural heritage, diverse wildlife, and stunning coastal landscapes of the region while seamlessly integrating modern amenities to elevate your travel experience.

Upgraded Interiors and Modern In-Cabin Features

As part of its commitment to provide an unforgettable travel experience, the Golden Chariot has undergone significant upgrades. The guest accommodations now feature a contemporary yet traditionally inspired aesthetic, showcasing elegant furnishings and improved upholstery. The refined use of wood and soft tones creates an ambiance reminiscent of a boutique heritage hotel, but on wheels.

Each cabin is equipped with smart televisions and Wi-Fi-enabled entertainment options, allowing guests to stay connected and enjoy curated content throughout their journey. While modernized, these enhancements do not detract from the train’s heritage charm, which remains at the heart of its identity. The luxurious train maintains a capacity for around eighty passengers with about forty cabins, including options for double beds, twin beds, and a specially designed cabin for differently-abled travelers.

Strengthened Safety and Security Systems

Safety is a top priority for IRCTC, and this upcoming season includes advanced security measures onboard the Golden Chariot. Closed-circuit television (CCTV) surveillance has been installed in key areas to enhance security monitoring and facilitate rapid incident response. Additionally, the train is now equipped with state-of-the-art fire detection and alarm systems, adhering to current railway safety standards and ensuring early alerts for any anomalies.

These upgrades support the existing operational protocols of Indian Railways and IRCTC, which encompass regular maintenance, staff training, and emergency procedures. Together, these enhancements assure guests safe travel while they explore the diverse states and landscapes of South India.

Capacity and Cabin Mix for the Luxury Train

The Golden Chariot boasts an eighteen-coach formation that includes guest cabins, dining areas, lounge spaces, and service coaches. The guest accommodations comprise approximately forty cabins that can comfortably host around eighty guests when fully booked. The mix includes double-bedded and twin-bedded arrangements, and as mentioned, there is one cabin specifically designed for differently-abled guests, reflecting IRCTC’s commitment to inclusive luxury rail tourism. All cabins are air-conditioned and feature en-suite facilities, ensuring a comfortable stay.

Three Curated Itineraries Across South India

For the 2026–2027 season, IRCTC has introduced three main itineraries, each carefully crafted to present a unique combination of heritage, nature, and coastal experiences across Karnataka and its neighboring states. All journeys commence and conclude in Bengaluru.

Pride of Karnataka

The “Pride of Karnataka” itinerary spans six days, focusing on key cultural and natural heritage destinations throughout Karnataka. Stops include Bengaluru, Bandipur, Mysuru, Halebidu, Chikmagalur, Hampi, Pattadakal, and Aihole, with some routes concluding in Goa before returning to Bengaluru.

This journey offers guests opportunities to witness wildlife in Bandipur, marvel at UNESCO-listed temples in Hampi and Pattadakal, and unwind on the beaches of Goa, showcasing the abundant natural and historical treasures of Karnataka.

Jewels of South

On the “Jewels of South” itinerary, travelers enjoy a journey that extends into Tamil Nadu and Kerala. This route typically includes Bengaluru, Mysuru, Hampi, Mahabalipuram, Thanjavur, Chettinad, Cochin, and Kumarakom before heading back to Bengaluru.

This itinerary is a feast for the senses, highlighting South India’s splendid temple architecture, serene coastal settlements, and breathtaking backwaters in Kerala. It’s designed to provide a comprehensive overview of the cultural gems of the southern peninsula.

Glimpses of Karnataka

The “Glimpses of Karnataka” itinerary is perfect for those with limited time, offering a four-day journey that includes Bengaluru, Bandipur, Mysuru, and Hampi. This shorter package provides a snapshot of Karnataka’s rich wildlife, royal heritage, and ancient temples.

This option, according to Karnataka Tourism, is designed for guests desiring a luxury rail experience without a lengthy commitment.

Seasonal Operation, Fares, and Booking Channels

The Golden Chariot traditionally runs from October to March during peak tourist season, with fixed departure dates typically starting from Bengaluru on Sundays. Journey durations range from three to six nights, depending on the selected itinerary.

Pricing for deluxe cabins begins at approximately 182,930 rupees for the “Glimpses of Karnataka” journey and can reach up to around 320,130 rupees for the more extensive “Pride of Karnataka with Goa” and “Jewels of South” itineraries. Early-bird promotions and discounts may be available for advance bookings.

Reservations can be made through the official Golden Chariot website, IRCTC’s tourism portal, or authorized dealers, with various payment options available.

Positioning within India’s Luxury Rail Tourism Portfolio

The Golden Chariot stands as a premier luxury tourist train focused on Southern India, operating under the auspices of Indian Railways and managed by IRCTC. Offering all-inclusive experiences that blur the lines between travel, lodging, dining, and guided excursions, it complements other luxury trains across the national network.

With these recent upgrades, IRCTC aims to enhance the Golden Chariot’s heritage charm while addressing modern expectations of safety and comfort. An experience aboard the Golden Chariot promises to deliver an unparalleled adventure through the architectural wonders, wildlife sanctuaries, and stunning coastlines of South India.
