Saudi Arabia’s Rail Services Experience Remarkable Surge, Carrying Over 45 Million Passengers in Q1 2026

In an impressive display of growth, Saudi Arabia’s rail services transported over 45 million passengers in the first quarter of 2026. This landmark achievement can be attributed to the significant expansion of urban and intercity rail initiatives, an increasing public preference for rail travel as an efficient and eco-friendly option, and ongoing infrastructure enhancements throughout the Kingdom.

The recent data, released by the Transport General Authority (TGA), underscores the growing acceptance and reliance on rail systems as an integral part of Saudi Arabia’s transportation network. Rail services have emerged as an appealing choice, helping to address road congestion while promoting sustainable urban development and economic vitality.

Urban rail services were the star of the show, accommodating a staggering 42 million passengers. A major driver of this traffic is the Riyadh Metro, which alone accounted for 31 million passengers during this period. The Riyadh Metro is pivotal in the city’s efforts to alleviate traffic congestion while offering modern, efficient public transportation options to its residents.

Moreover, automated transport systems were significant contributors to passenger numbers. The automated transport network at King Abdulaziz Airport served about 10 million passengers, while the system at Princess Nourah bint Abdulrahman University provided transport for around 621,000 individuals. These automated systems are designed to enhance overall mobility, making travel within key regions of the Kingdom more seamless.

The TGA’s findings reveal a growing appetite for rail services within Saudi Arabia, emphasizing the country’s ongoing success in creating transport infrastructures that alleviate traffic issues and enhance travel efficiency. By promoting rail transport, these initiatives are also aligned with the Kingdom’s aims to reduce emissions and improve the quality of urban life.

Boost in Intercity Rail Services

Beyond urban networks, Saudi Arabia’s intercity rail services also exhibited robust performance in the first quarter of 2026. The Haramain High-Speed Railway, which connects the holy cities of Makkah and Madinah with Jeddah, successfully transported 2 million travelers. This high-speed service has become increasingly popular, significantly shortening travel times and enhancing convenience for passengers journeying between these major religious hubs.

The Eastern Railway network, linking Riyadh with the Eastern Province, including Dammam and its port, recorded over 349,000 passengers. This route provides critical access to important cities such as Abqaiq and Al-Kharj, further enhancing regional connectivity.

Additionally, the Northern Railway network, which stretches from Riyadh to Al-Haditha near the Jordanian border, facilitated travel for approximately 218,000 passengers. This important line connects residents and businesses across the northwest region, reaching cities including Al-Majmaah, Qassim, Hail, Al-Jouf, and Qurayyat.

The TGA reiterated that the expansion and success of intercity rail services are crucial in providing travelers with a safer, more reliable, and eco-friendly mode of transportation as compared to road travel. These services play an essential role not only in improving connectivity but also in supporting the Kingdom’s broader sustainability initiatives by lowering carbon emissions and enhancing overall transport efficiency.

Year-on-Year Growth Analysis

A comparison with the previous year highlights just how significant this growth has been. In the first quarter of 2025, Saudi Arabia’s rail network recorded just over 35 million passengers. With intercity rail services transporting more than 3.4 million passengers that year, the increase in numbers for Q1 2026 clearly showcases the success of the Kingdom’s efforts in upgrading and expanding its rail services.

The impressive surge in rail travel indicates the essential role rail systems are playing in Saudi Arabia’s transportation strategy. As the Kingdom continues to enhance its rail network, it is evident that rail mobility will only grow in importance. The ongoing development of both urban and intercity rail networks is vital for achieving national objectives related to improving transportation, mitigating traffic congestion, and fostering environmental sustainability and economic growth.
