Exciting developments are unfolding in the Indian aviation landscape as the coastal region of Daman gears up to establish itself on the India aviation map. This new civil airport, which marks a significant investment in infrastructure, is poised to enhance travel connections between Daman and key cities including Delhi, Mumbai, and Ahmedabad. The upcoming Daman civil airport is not just an infrastructural achievement; it is set to be a game changer for the local economy and Union territory tourism. Direct commercial flights to this popular yet underserved destination have been absent for years. However, with the official opening scheduled for early June, the accessibility and appeal of Daman are set for a remarkable upgrade. This transformative project aims to solidify strategic economic corridors and boost South Gujarat infrastructure development to modern standards.

Constructed with a robust investment of Rs 97 crore, the airport reflects international standards in both architectural and operational design. Occupying an expansive area of 1.01 lakh square meters, the airport complex represents a vital shift in the local transportation landscape. The terminal building, crafted to enhance passenger flow and minimize wait times, boasts a built-up area of approximately 5,460 square meters.
To cater to the expected passenger traffic, the terminal is equipped with twelve operational check-in counters, with plans for expansion to sixteen as needed. Additionally, a spacious waiting lounge accommodates up to 180 guests, while a VIP lounge is furnished to welcome sixteen dignitaries, ensuring a comfortable experience for all travelers.
The launch of this new aviation hub is set to fill critical gaps in travel connectivity. The initial flight service will kick off with a direct link from Daman to Delhi, opening on the inaugural day. Following this launch, plans are in place to establish flights connecting Daman with Mumbai and Ahmedabad, further integrating this coastal enclave into the national transportation network.
Alliance Air has been designated to manage these flights, which will operate on the Daman-Delhi route, as well as connecting Mumbai and Ahmedabad. The airport’s airside infrastructure includes an expansive apron that can accommodate two A320-size aircraft simultaneously. Ground transport facilities have also been considered, with a parking zone capable of housing 57 vehicles, providing convenience for travelers arriving by car.
Previously, Daman’s aviation operations were limited to a small airstrip used solely by the Indian Coast Guard. However, the newly constructed airport will facilitate civilian air services, requiring a shift in governance. Once operational, the management and oversight of the airport will be entrusted to the Airports Authority of India (AAI).
A formal memorandum of understanding has been signed between the local administration and AAI, transferring long-term operational responsibilities to the national authority. In the interim, the director of Surat airport is overseeing day-to-day operations to ensure a smooth transition and adherence to safety measures. The date for the grand opening ceremony is yet to be confirmed but is anticipated to coincide with a visit by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
The launch of Daman’s civil airport is set to unleash tremendous economic potential across the coastal and adjacent industrial zones. With direct flights reducing travel time dramatically—bringing the journey from major Indian cities down to less than an hour—tourism is expected to flourish.
