The technology includes AI-powered cameras strategically placed along the railway corridors, continuously monitoring their surroundings to identify approaching wildlife. Upon detection, this advanced system activates custom audio deterrent signals aimed at encouraging animals to move away from the tracks, representing a proactive alternative to traditional methods like fences and warning signs.

Extensive Field Trials Across Key Routes

The trials are being held across several vital Swedish rail routes, including Dalabanan, Bergslagsbanan, Godsstråket genom Bergslagen, and Bergslagenpendeln, in collaboration with the regional train authority Tåg i Bergslagen and operator VR. This partnership enables the alignment of advanced technologies with railway networks that frequently encounter wildlife, allowing for refinement of the system in realistic scenarios.

Dynamic Detection and Deterrence in Real-Time

Central to the system is its ability to perform real-time video analysis. The AI identifies various wildlife species such as moose, roe deer, foxes, and wild boar, and subsequently deploys species-specific acoustic signals that gently guide them away from collision paths. Early evaluations have shown that the AI exhibits high detection accuracy, including for smaller species like farm animals and birds, which are often challenging to monitor. Each wildlife encounter is recorded and categorized, enabling the machine-learning model to enhance its capabilities as it accumulates more data.

Government Support and Innovation Through Vinnova

Receiving support from Vinnova, Sweden’s national agency for innovation, the project aims to implement AI-based solutions in the rail sector to minimize animal collisions, enhance safety, and reduce service interruptions. The endorsement from Vinnova underscores the strategic importance of integrating such technology into the digital infrastructure and sustainable transport models.

Confronting the Wildlife Collision Challenge

Sweden faces an annual average of 5,000 train-versus-animal collisions, which pose risks not only to wildlife but also threaten safety and disrupt service reliability.
