The Mediterranean Sea is one of the world’s most frequented and ecologically sensitive water bodies, currently undergoing significant stress due to human activities. Among the wildlife feeling the impacts is the Mediterranean monk seal, a species classified as endangered by the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. This remarkable marine mammal relies heavily on undisturbed coastal caves and seagrass beds for its breeding and resting needs. With fewer than 100 individual seals remaining along the Turkish coastline, the threats posed by boat traffic, coastal development, anchoring damage, and public unawareness continue to endanger their survival.
In regions where tourism serves as a vital economic driver, balancing the interests of tourism with the imperative of marine ecosystem protection is both a challenge and an opportunity. Following a successful initial phase launched in 2024, TUI Sea the Change Turkey, in partnership with Akdeniz Koruma Derneği, a prominent conservation organization, is set to embark on Phase 2 of its initiative, which aims to bolster habitat conservation efforts and deepen engagement with the tourism industry.
The ambitious project focuses on the restoration and protection of approximately 200,000 square metres of coastal and marine habitat, including essential monk seal breeding caves and seagrass meadows critical for marine biodiversity. These efforts stretch from the scenic Fethiye-Göcek region to Kaş, enhancing habitats vital for monk seals to thrive.
The monitoring of monk seals in key coastal caves utilizes state-of-the-art camera-based systems, now augmented by innovative acoustic monitoring. This involves combining underwater sound recordings with visual data to better understand seal behavior and habitat use. The Sarıgerme seagrass monitoring station conducts biannual assessments, with restoration work in places like Aşı Bay aimed at mending damage inflicted by anchoring. Ongoing patrols and surveillance further strengthen these conservation initiatives, backing advocacy for the establishment of Sarıgerme–Aşı Bay as a Marine Protected Area.
A key aspect of the initiative focuses on engaging various stakeholders within the tourism sector. Collaborating with 20 tourism-related organizations—including hotels, marinas, and boat operators—the program champions conservation-friendly practices. The expanded Conservation-Friendly Boats programme aims to minimize underwater noise, avoid disturbances near monk seal habitats, and reduce anchor damage to seagrass meadows.
This approach fosters a unique intersection between conservation and tourism, encouraging visitors to participate in sustainable activities, such as low-impact kayaking excursions that allow exploration of seagrass meadows. By demonstrating how tourism can support environmental stewardship, the initiative enhances the visitor experience while championing conservation.
The initiative places a strong emphasis on education and awareness for both locals and tourists. To date, over 245 local participants have engaged in marine conservation training to empower them for long-term ecosystem protection. Approximately 4,000 tourists have benefited from sustainable tourism experiences, while a targeted children’s programme introduces young learners to marine conservation concepts through an educational card game highlighting endangered species and critical marine habitats.
Additionally, outreach efforts reached 600 schoolchildren through workshops held in schools, community festivals, and local events. Awareness campaigns implemented in hotels have also focused on the significance of monk seal conservation and the health of seagrass meadows, promoting sustainable tourism practices across the hospitality sector.
By integrating science-based habitat protection with active tourism engagement, TUI Sea the Change Turkey exemplifies how the tourism industry can contribute positively to marine conservation efforts. The initiative not only supports the survival of the Mediterranean monk seal but also reinforces coastal habitat protection, advocating for responsible tourism practices that yield direct benefits for local communities and the broader tourism ecosystem.
This model illuminates pathways for sustainable tourism growth that harmonizes economic development with environmental protection, facilitating collaborative operations between hotels, marinas, and tour operators that align with conservation goals while enhancing visitor experiences.
The TUI Sea the Change endeavor in Turkey is part of a broader effort by TUI Care Foundation to safeguard marine environments in various locales, including Mallorca, Mozambique, and Indonesia. This project launch aligns with the Marine May activities, an awareness month dedicated to ocean preservation and the promotion of sustainable tourism practices.
By engaging in habitat restoration, stimulating public awareness, and fostering educational outreach, TUI Sea the Change in Turkey serves as a prime example of how tourism can thrive economically while concurrently ensuring the long-term survival of endangered species and the promotion of sustainable tourism practices throughout the region.
