The caravan officially kicked off on June 23 at Balar Hotel in Barangay Balaring, Boac, under the direction of DOT Assistant Secretary Judilyn Quiachon. This program falls under the DOT’s broader framework, positioning Marinduque as a must-visit cultural tourism destination in the Philippines.
Marinduque’s tourism strategy is boosted through a well-structured promotion of both cultural heritage and eco-tourism experiences. The caravan serves as a gateway to highlight the province’s unique offerings, aiming to attract a wider audience.
According to Assistant Secretary Quiachon, the initiative endeavors to prominently present Marinduque’s distinct identity and tourism potential to both local and international visitors. This structured approach not only enhances visibility but also incorporates lesser-known cultural sites into wider tourism development strategies.
Aligned with long-term goals for economic development, tourism is strategically positioned as a vital driver for local job creation and community empowerment. Cultural preservation remains central to these planning frameworks, ensuring that tourism growth is sustainable and community-focused.
Involving a diverse range of stakeholders, the caravan adopts a multi-sectoral approach to tourism development. Participants include DOT officials, with notable presence from Assistant Regional Director Gladys Quesea representing the MIMAROPA Regional Director Roberto Alabado, along with Marinduque Governor Melecio Go and representatives from six local government units.
The initiative has also attracted involvement from national government agencies, travel bloggers, and various tourism industry players. This collaborative framework aims to enhance partnerships between government and private tourism stakeholders while improving marketing strategies for the destination.
By fostering this engagement model, the caravan diversifies tourism narratives, enabling both official bodies and content creators to contribute to impactful storytelling and digital promotion of the province’s tourism potential.
One of the standout features of the program is the emphasis on Marinduque’s butterfly farming industry, which serves as both a cultural livelihood and a tourism attraction. Following the caravan’s launch, participants had the opportunity to visit a butterfly farm in Barangay Cawit in Boac, where they engaged with a community of 237 dedicated butterfly breeders.
Notably dubbed the Butterfly Capital of the Philippines, Marinduque provides approximately 85 percent of the nation’s butterfly pupae supply for export. This unique intersection of economic activity and tourism experience represents a significant competitive advantage for the destination.
During this visit, a symbolic eco-tourism activity took place where thousands of butterflies were released in collaboration with DOT Assistant Secretary Quiachon and local breeders. This immersive experience links visitors to environmental sustainability and supports local livelihoods.
The second day of the caravan centered on the discovery of Marinduque’s cultural and heritage treasures. Participants were taken to the birthplace of the renowned Moriones tradition, an essential element of the province’s cultural identity.
In addition, visitors engaged in mask-making workshops at the Poblacion Mogpog Wood Carving Shop, showcasing traditional craftsmanship. The Panuluyan Farmstay in Barangay Masalukot, Santa Cruz was also featured, highlighting rural tourism and agritourism synergies.
These organized visits reinforced the continuity of cultural practices while preserving traditional knowledge systems through tourism engagement.
On the caravan’s final day, scheduled community-building activities navigated several of Marinduque’s prominent natural and historical sites. These included visits to the Malbog Sulfuric Hot Spring—a recognized wellness tourism destination—and a traditional pottery-making site that reflects local artisan skills.
The itinerary also encompassed Poctoy White Beach, an inviting coastal destination for marine and leisure activities, and the historic Pulang Lupa Battle Monument in Torrijos, which underscores the province’s importance in the nation’s heritage narrative.
This varied itinerary positions Marinduque as a blend of nature, rich history, vibrant culture, and wellness experiences.
The Parine Na! Marinduque Cultural Tourism Development Caravan stands as an embodiment of the DOT’s commitment to sustainable and community-based tourism development. The initiative focuses on ensuring local communities are integral to tourism, fostering increased visitor engagement.
Tourism growth in Marinduque aligns closely with strategies for environmental conservation, cultural preservation, and enhancement of local livelihoods. By embedding community involvement into tourism planning, a more inclusive and resilient model for destination development has been established.
The successful launch of the Parine Na! Marinduque Cultural Tourism Development Caravan marks a significant step in positioning the province as an emerging cultural tourism hotspot in the Philippines. Through meaningful engagement, collaborative efforts, and immersive experiences, the province’s visibility has been notably increased.
With its rich cultural identity, unique eco-tourism features like butterfly farming, and diverse heritage sites, Marinduque is strategically poised for sustained tourism growth. This initiative further underscores the Department of Tourism’s dedication to fostering sustainable, community-centered tourism across regional destinations.
