The economic fallout from the conflict in Iran has had widespread consequences, affecting global energy markets and placing Asian economies at the forefront of these disruptions. The region’s heavy reliance on imported fuel makes it especially susceptible to fluctuations in oil prices, and as energy costs continue to climb, airlines, transportation providers, and tourism enterprises are feeling the pinch, leading to increased prices for travelers.

The impact of increased fuel prices has manifested quickly for travelers, notably in soaring airfares, additional surcharges from airlines, and limited flight options. Many airlines across Asia are reassessing their operations; major carriers, including Vietnam Airlines and Cathay Pacific, have modified schedules or cut services in response to inflated costs.
The turbulence isn’t isolated to Asia alone; airlines worldwide are facing similar challenges. Airspace restrictions and temporary airport closures in the Persian Gulf have necessitated longer flight routes, leading to higher operational expenses that are ultimately passed on to travelers.

For instance, Cathay Pacific recently increased its medium-haul fuel surcharge from 264 to 633 Hong Kong dollars, with long-haul route surcharges rising from 569 to 1,362 Hong Kong dollars. According to Lavinia Lau, Cathay’s chief customer and commercial officer, sustained high jet fuel prices are creating ongoing cost pressures for airlines. The escalating costs have prompted many travelers to rethink their vacation plans. For example, Sandra Awodele, a freelance travel writer, had eagerly anticipated traveling to Thailand but found the rising airfares hard to justify.

While airlines and travelers adapt, the impacts are even more severe for local workers. In Southeast Asia’s tourism-centric destinations, job opportunities are directly tied to visitor numbers. A drop in tourism can immediately affect those relying on daily customer interactions, from tuk-tuk drivers to hotel staff.
For instance, the livelihoods of many workers in Siem Reap, Cambodia, where Angkor Wat draws tourists worldwide, are now at risk as visitor numbers decline substantially.
Tourism’s significance to Southeast Asia is immense. According to figures from the World Travel and Tourism Council, tourism constituted nearly 11 percent of economic activity across ASEAN nations in 2019, underpinning millions of jobs and generating critical foreign exchange revenues. Thailand’s tourism sector alone accounts for about 13 percent of its GDP.
Economists have cautioned that the consequences of the conflict may hinder economic growth across the Asia-Pacific, with estimates indicating a potential reduction of 0.1 to 0.4 percentage points in growth by 2026 due to war-related disruptions. The interconnectivity of global economic systems means that challenges in one region can have far-reaching effects.
Business owners in Southeast Asia are quickly learning to adapt to shifting market conditions. Le Tuyet Lan, who manages bed-and-breakfast properties in Vietnam, noted that during uncertain times, travel budgets are often restricted first. This shift in spending behavior can ripple through various sectors, forcing businesses to rethink pricing strategies and service offerings.
As summer travel approaches, uncertainties dominate forecasts across Southeast Asia’s tourism landscape. The combined effects of rising fuel prices and economic doubts pose new challenges for regions still recovering from earlier setbacks. While tourism remains vital for economic growth, its recovery journey is increasingly rife with complications stemming from events far beyond the region.
