In a remarkable development for faith-based travel, Southern Basilicata has officially joined the World Religious Tourism Network. This international initiative aims to enhance spiritual tourism by fostering intercultural dialogue, preserving local identities, and driving sustainable regional growth.
The accession was facilitated by GAL “La Cittadella del Sapere,” a public-private development agency serving 27 municipalities in the southwestern region of Basilicata, including the picturesque town of Maratea. This area is celebrated for its stunning environmental features, rich historical heritage, cultural wealth, and deep-rooted spiritual traditions.

The formal agreement that integrated Southern Basilicata into the network was executed under the guidance of Edit Székely from Europe. The World Religious Tourism Network currently spans 18 countries and is continuously expanding, with new members such as Mexico, Peru, and Guatemala. The inclusion of regions like Israel and the Holy Land underscores the growing international significance of religious tourism.
A vital partnership has also been established between the network and the Italian Religious Hospitality Association, representing around 3,000 lodging facilities throughout Italy. This collaboration is particularly beneficial for Basilicata, reinforcing the connection between the tourism infrastructure and faith-based travel opportunities.
The core mission of this initiative is encapsulated in the phrase “Religious Tourism for Peace.” This approach emphasizes travel grounded in spirituality, which fosters dialogue, harmony, and understanding among diverse cultures and belief systems. Thus, religious tourism is envisioned not merely as an economic activity but as a cultural bridge among communities.
Support for Southern Basilicata’s entry into the network has come from key figures, including Biagio Maimone, Italy’s coordinator for the World Religious Tourism Network, and Nicola Timpone, general director of GAL “La Cittadella del Sapere.” The institutional backing of Franco Muscolino, president of the GAL organization, has also been instrumental.
Maimone, who also serves as Director of Communications at the Bambino Gesù Foundation of Cairo, has been influenced by his studies in Franciscan spirituality and aims to promote intra-church dialogue that reflects the pastoral direction of Pope Francis.
According to Timpone, this agreement marks a significant milestone for Southern Basilicata, potentially elevating the region’s profile on the global stage and opening avenues for growth within international cultural and spiritual tourism frameworks. He emphasizes that this partnership will yield long-lasting benefits, supporting sustainable development, enhancing regional promotion, and showcasing local heritage and identity more effectively.
This initiative represents a strategic advancement for Basilicata, reinforcing its presence on the international spiritual, cultural, and sustainable tourism routes.
Southern Basilicata is characterized by a rich spiritual identity, manifesting in its pilgrimage routes, sanctuaries, historic churches, and serene spaces—all nestled within breathtaking landscapes. These elements combine to create an authentic spiritual landscape where faith, history, culture, and nature harmoniously intertwine.
Noteworthy sites include Maratea, renowned as the “City of 44 Churches,” which boasts the Basilica of Saint Blaise and the iconic Christ the Redeemer statue overlooking the Gulf of Policastro. The Sanctuary of the Black Madonna of the Sacred Mount of Viggiano stands out as one of Southern Italy’s historic pilgrimage sites and serves as a center of Marian devotion in Basilicata.
Another significant destination is the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Mount Sirino, perched nearly 1,900 meters high within the Lucanian Apennines National Park. This site attracts thousands each year who partake in ancestral pilgrimage traditions, drawn to one of Basilicata’s most breathtaking mountain sanctuaries.
The Sanctuary of Our Lady of the Mountain of Avigliano, located on Mount Carmine, also bears immense symbolic and religious significance as a destination for pilgrimage, meditation, and contemplation amid stunning natural landscapes. Additionally, the Val d’Agri territory, along with the Pollino National Park, enhances this spiritual tapestry, rich with historic villages and long-standing religious customs that deepen the contemplative experience throughout the Lucanian area.
“Southern Basilicata is evolving into a comprehensive and integrated spiritual itinerary, linking faith, culture, and landscape in an unparalleled way, thereby offering an experience rich in historical, religious, and personal significance,” the statement asserts.
President Franco Muscolino expressed, “By engaging with the World Religious Tourism Network, we aim to illuminate our heritage, deeply embedded in faith, culture, and local customs, showcasing Southern Basilicata’s spiritual wealth on the international stage.”
Maimone highlighted that membership in the World Religious Tourism Network could help the region cultivate a sophisticated model of sustainable spiritual tourism, enhancing pilgrimage routes, predominant places of worship, and the area’s cultural identity while driving opportunities for economic advancement.
Currently, discussions are underway with the Italian Ministry of Tourism to establish a national body dedicated to promoting and developing religious tourism, emphasizing its cultural and social importance.
Today, religious tourism is increasingly recognized as a holistic approach to integrated development, blending spirituality, sustainability, community empowerment, and the nurturing of local economies related to hospitality and cultural experiences.
“Southern Basilicata, with its pristine landscapes, sacred sites, and vibrant religious character, holds the potential to emerge as a global leader in spiritual tourism, providing a sanctuary for contemplation, peace, and intercultural dialogue,” Maimone reflects.
The network’s affiliation will also permit the creation of international pilgrimage routes, cultural festivals, spiritual events, and platforms for intercultural exchanges, thereby amplifying the region’s global visibility and attracting increased cultural and religious tourists.
“This partnership will allow the world to discover Southern Basilicata’s profound religious heritage and its vibrant culture of faith, opening doors to sustainable economic development,” concludes Edit Székely.
“Through the promotion of religious tourism, we aim to foster solidarity, sustainability, and spirituality, essential elements for humanity’s collective future.”
