Etihad Airways Expands Flights Between Kabul and Abu Dhabi, Strengthening Afghanistan-UAE Connectivity

Etihad Airways is set to significantly enhance travel options between the United Arab Emirates and Afghanistan by doubling its flights on the Abu Dhabi to Kabul route, beginning 15 July 2026. This strategic development is a response to the increasing demand from the large Afghan community in the Gulf, as well as the growing cultural and commercial ties between Abu Dhabi, Kabul, and their surrounding regions. With this expansion, the airline will now offer two daily flights each way, presenting travelers with more convenient departure times that cater to business, leisure, and family travel needs. This enhancement positions Abu Dhabi as a vital hub for regional and international travel, linking Afghanistan with key destinations in Europe and beyond.

Since its launch in March 2026, which started with four weekly flights, the route’s swift uptake has surpassed initial expectations. Etihad’s decision to implement double daily rotations, utilizing Airbus A320 aircraft, demonstrates the airline’s adaptability and commitment to meeting passenger needs while efficiently managing capacity. The A320’s configuration, accommodating eight Business and 150 Economy seats, is perfect for the three-hour-and-thirty-minute journey, thereby allowing for increased frequency without overextending fleet capabilities.

Demand Surge and Strategic Developments

The robust growth in bookings highlights the rising demand from both direct travelers and those connecting through Abu Dhabi to other destinations worldwide. Passengers will benefit from improved options for family visits, business trips, and leisure pursuits, addressing a pivotal demand from the Afghan community in the Gulf. Additionally, the increased flight frequency strengthens commercial relations, vital for businesses that rely on dependable air travel between Afghanistan and the UAE.

According to Etihad’s Chief Revenue and Commercial Officer, evolving booking trends have informed the decision to broaden flight availability. This data-driven approach exemplifies the airline’s dedication to adaptive network planning, ensuring that Abu Dhabi continues to serve as a premier regional hub connecting Afghanistan, the UAE, and international markets.

Updated Flight Schedule from Kabul

The new service schedule comprises two daily rotations, offering enhanced convenience for travelers:

Flight From Departure To Arrival Frequency Aircraft
EY310 Abu Dhabi 14:45 Kabul 18:15 Daily A320

EY312 Abu Dhabi 09:55 Kabul 13:25 Daily A320

This improved schedule provides greater travel flexibility for those with work commitments or family obligations, as well as for passengers connecting to long-haul flights from Abu Dhabi to various destinations, including Europe, India, and further afield.

Traveling to Kabul: Essential Considerations

For those planning visits to Kabul, it is crucial to make comprehensive arrangements ahead of time, considering safety measures, transportation, and compliance with local regulations.

Travel Insurance is highly recommended for all visitors, especially given Afghanistan’s classification as high-risk. Providers like SafetyWing offer flexible plans starting at about 2 USD per day for short-term coverage, including emergency medical assistance, trip protection, and coverage for lost baggage. Long-term policies are also available, offering comprehensive health coverage, mental health provisions, maternity care, and worldwide protection across 170+ countries.

Travel Permits are also required for visitors. Since September 2025, all travelers must secure permits through Afghan Tour and must be accompanied by licensed guides within the country. Afghan Tour operates from Saturday to Wednesday, 8 am to 3–4 pm, and Thursday 8 am to 1 pm, with no services on Fridays.

Getting Around Kabul

Transportation within Kabul includes private and shared taxis as well as public buses. Private taxis are frequently used for their flexible service, with fares varying based on negotiation. For example, a standard 7 km journey may cost between 120 and 200 AFN depending on the time and traffic conditions. Shared taxis are available for about 20 AFN, while buses have lower fares of 5–10 AFN but are slower with fewer routes serviced. Popular routes include fares from the Khyber Hotel to highlights such as Babur Garden (120 AFN), the National Museum (250 AFN), and Bamyan (300–350 AFN).

Intercity travel departs from various terminals, with northern destinations like Mazar-i-Sharif and Fayzabad using the northern terminal, while routes to Herat, Kandahar, Ghazni, and Helmand leave from the Kandahar-Herat station. Bamyan has its dedicated terminal, and travelers to Jalalabad/Torkham utilize specific terminals.

Connecting with Kabul

Visitors can purchase Afghan Wireless SIM cards at Park Tower, catering to both genders with separate counters to ensure seamless communication for navigating the city or organizing local travel.

Where to Stay in Kabul

Kabul offers a variety of accommodation options that cater to different budgets. The Khyber Hotel is a budget-friendly choice located centrally, with rates starting at 1,500 AFN (around 20 USD), inclusive of basic breakfast and close proximity to facilities. Mid-range options, such as the Golden Star Hotel, start at 3,000 AFN and attract a mix of foreign and local visitors. Economical accommodations are also accessible; Shahr Guest House features single rooms at approximately 800 AFN (10.60 USD) with shared amenities.

Local Culture and Shopping

For those interested in immersing themselves in local culture, traditional Afghan clothing is available. Female visitors will discover a variety of formal dresses suited for both daily wear and special occasions, while men can find traditional garments at numerous dedicated shops throughout the area.

Enhancing UAE-Afghanistan Relations

The bolstered direct route from Abu Dhabi to Kabul serves a purpose well beyond commercial growth; it reflects the enduring relationship between Afghanistan and the UAE. This service not only facilitates travel for the diaspora but also nurtures trade and tourism between these nations. As Etihad expands its operations on this vital corridor, Abu Dhabi consolidates its stature as a regional aviation hub, intricately linking Afghanistan to major international networks.

The increase to two daily flights highlights the ongoing necessity for convenient, reliable travel options. Travelers will appreciate the added flexibility, optimized aircraft deployment, and improved access to extensive networks in both the UAE and Afghanistan.
