In a remarkable development for regional travel, Indian Railways has launched a new express train service connecting the vibrant cities of Bengaluru and Mumbai. This bi-weekly express service promises to enhance connectivity between Karnataka and Maharashtra, fulfilling a long-standing demand for improved travel options along this crucial economic corridor.
The official inauguration of the Bengaluru-Mumbai Express took place during a virtual ceremony, led by Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, alongside other dignitaries, including Union Minister of State for Railways V. Somanna and Bengaluru South MP Tejasvi Surya. This marks the introduction of a fresh train connection between the two megacities, a significant event that hasn’t occurred in over three decades since an alternative rail option was established in 1983. The new service is expected to cater to the travel needs of business professionals, students, and leisure travelers alike.

The train will operate over a track length of approximately 1,210 kilometers, with its service routes meticulously planned to encompass several key intermediate cities and commercial centers in both states. Operations will begin from the Sir M. Visvesvaraya Terminal (SMVT) in Bengaluru and conclude at the Lokmanya Tilak Terminus (LTT) in Mumbai.
This route will serve important stops in Karnataka, including Tumakuru, Davangere, SSS Hubballi Junction, Dharwad, and Belagavi. As the train crosses into Maharashtra, it will halt at Miraj Junction, Sangli, Karad, Satara, Lonand, and the bustling metropolitan hub of Pune. Before reaching Mumbai, additional stops will occur at Lonavala, Karjat, Kalyan, and Thane. This extensive network is designed to alleviate the heavy passenger traffic traditionally seen on other trains, such as the Udyan Express.
The train will operate bi-weekly, with services scheduled to begin on May 23, 2026, from Bengaluru and on May 24, 2026, for the return trip from Mumbai. For passengers traveling from Karnataka to Maharashtra, designated as Train Number 16553, the train will depart from Sir M. Visvesvaraya Terminal at 8:35 PM every Tuesday and Saturday, completing an overnight journey.
Key timings include: 10:13 PM at Tumakuru, 1:23 AM at Davangere, and various other key stops leading to its arrival in Mumbai at approximately 8:40 PM on Wednesdays and Sundays.
Conversely, for travelers heading back to Karnataka, Train Number 16554 will leave Lokmanya Tilak Terminus at 11:15 PM every Sunday and Wednesday, with key stops including Pune and Belagavi en route back to Bengaluru, where it will arrive at 10:30 PM on Mondays and Thursdays.
Indian Railways has introduced a competitive fare structure to serve a diverse range of traveler budgets. Ticket pricing varies based on the chosen class of travel. For those opting for non-air-conditioned Sleeper Class (SL), the fare is set at ₹750 per journey. Meanwhile, air-conditioned travel options are available for enhanced comfort, with AC 3 Tier (3A) tickets priced at ₹1,880 and AC 2 Tier (2A) tickets at ₹2,575.
The express is constructed with seventeen modern Linke Hofmann Busch (LHB) coaches, each designed to prioritize passenger safety and comfort. The composition will include one AC 2-Tier coach, four AC 3-Tier coaches, and multiple Sleeper Class coaches, along with four General Second Class coaches for unreserved travel.
Additionally, the design features a luggage-cum-brake van that accommodates passengers with physical disabilities and a luggage-cum-generator car to guarantee continuous electrical power supply.
During the train’s launch event, government officials hinted at exciting expansions in the South Western Railway network. MP Tejasvi Surya revealed upcoming plans for a state-of-the-art Vande Bharat overnight sleeper service that will run on the Bengaluru-Mumbai route, promising even faster travel times.
Overall, this new Bengaluru-Mumbai Express and future developments aim to further enhance travel experiences in India’s railway infrastructure, providing seamless and enhanced connectivity for all.
