New Zealand International Convention Centre Elevates MICE Standards with Cultural Integration Led by Te Raukura Hawke

The New Zealand International Convention Centre (NZICC) is setting a new standard in the global MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions) arena with the recent appointment of Te Raukura Hawke as Pou Tikanga, or cultural advisor. This innovative role is a significant leap forward, as it establishes the only dedicated cultural position within the operational framework of a convention center in New Zealand.

This strategic move is integral to ensuring Māori values, traditions, and perspectives are infused into all dimensions of the NZICC’s operations, transcending purely ceremonial purposes. The aim is to weave cultural principles into the fabric of routine processes, thereby enriching the visitor experience at one of New Zealand’s prime venues for business events.

The thoughtful appointment underscores a flourishing partnership between the NZICC and Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei, the tangata whenua or local people of Tāmaki Makaurau (Auckland). This collaboration is centered around cultural respect and connectivity, focusing on creating more enriching experiences for attendees of international events and business gatherings within New Zealand.

Cultural Leadership Enhances the MICE Landscape in New Zealand

Te Raukura Hawke’s role is part of a broader initiative to elevate the cultural identity of Tāmaki Makaurau in the context of global events. His responsibilities as Pou Tikanga involve bolstering the cultural competency of the NZICC team, ensuring that tikanga (customs and protocols) are consistently reflected in day-to-day operations.

The significance of cultural authenticity in this relationship is accentuated by a meaningful event in 2023, when the venue was officially named Te Tumu, signifying “the foundation”, a name befitting its cultural ties with the region’s indigenous people.

Further establishing this connection, in March 2024, Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei and SkyCity Auckland forged a strategic agreement, known as a kōtuitanga, aimed at collaboration, shared objectives, and promoting the profile of Tāmaki Makaurau to both local and international audiences.

Through Hawke’s appointment, this cultural collaboration is now seamlessly integrated into the daily operations of the NZICC. His expertise is anticipated to facilitate stronger ties with various iwi and hapū, ensuring that Māori perspectives are recognized and represented throughout.

Te Raukura Hawke, who shares ancestral ties to Ngāti Whātua, Ngāpuhi, and Tainui, was raised on the ancestral lands of Takaparawhau, Ōrākei. As a first-language speaker of te reo Māori, he has dedicated his career to elevating Māori culture in areas where it has often been overlooked.

Embedding Māori Culture in NZICC’s Global Business Events Framework

In today’s international MICE sector, the cultural narratives and identities of destinations are redefining how attendees experience events, going beyond mere infrastructure. At NZICC, cultural integration is regarded as vital to how visitors engage with New Zealand.

Under Te Raukura Hawke’s guidance, cultural practices are becoming embedded within the everyday functioning of the NZICC. His role is not merely a symbolic one; it ensures that tikanga influences standard processes rather than being relegated to special events.

Lisa Davis, CEO of Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei, emphasized that this appointment marks a significant milestone for both the iwi and the NZICC. She noted that Hawke’s deep-rooted connection to the area, coupled with his extensive knowledge of tikanga and whakapapa (ancestral lineage), brings a uniquely authentic cultural perspective that standard training cannot replicate.

Davis elaborated on the importance of manaakitanga, the Māori principle of hospitality and care, as central to Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei’s ethos. By incorporating these values within the NZICC, visitors are expected to forge deeper connections with the space, its residents, and its stories.

For the global MICE sector, this appointment serves as a powerful reminder of how cultural identity can serve as a cornerstone for professional events. NZICC’s approach is focused on fostering an environment where international guests can connect with the local heritage while enjoying superior event services.

Te Raukura Hawke stated that this position transcends mere cultural integration; it seeks to embed te ao Māori, the Māori worldview, into the essence of NZICC’s operations. He stressed the importance of delivering a genuine experience, ensuring that tikanga is practiced with integrity and that Māori culture is upheld with dignity.

The appointment of Te Raukura Hawke heralds a transformative chapter for the New Zealand International Convention Centre as it aims to cultivate a robust cultural framework within the global MICE landscape. By prioritizing Māori values in its operations, NZICC is reinforcing the intrinsic link between business events, cultural heritage, and New Zealand’s unique identity.
